A GIANT ballot box came to Yorkshire yesterday as a campaign calling for a referendum on the new EU treaty gathered pace.
The giant inflatable, pumped up to promote the Yorkshire for a Referendum campaign, greeted visitors at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds.

The Yorkshire campaign is part of a cross-party national drive, I Want a Referendum.

Victor Watson, chairman of Yorkshire for a Referendum, said: "This new treaty hands over considerable areas of decision making to unelected politicians in Brussels.

"The referendum debate goes to the heart of the way we are governed. We elect our MPs to govern on our behalf; if they want to give away their responsibility to European institutions, they should ask us first.

"Gordon Brown must keep his promise if he wants to prove he is serious when he talks about listening to people and restoring trust in politics."

The national campaign's chairman, Derek Scott, said: "The constitution is bad news for British businesses. It will amplify the EU's formidable capacity for generating new laws and add to the tangle of red tape. A recent poll of chief executives showed that 54 per cent believe the burdens of EU regulations outweigh the benefits."
